Kids at home often try to trick their elders in some way on this day. While everyone enjoys this day, most people don’t know why we celebrate it.

There are a couple of stories about why we have April Fool’s Day. One story goes back to 1582 when France changed its calendar from Julian to Gregorian.

In the Julian calendar, the new year started on April 1st, but in the Gregorian calendar, it started on January 1st. Many people didn’t understand this change. So, those who still celebrated the new year on April 1st were teased and called “April Fools.” That’s how the tradition started.

Another story connects it to an ancient Roman festival called Hilaria, where people dressed up to make others laugh. This festival happened around the end of March, close to April Fool’s Day.

In Italy, Belgium, and France, people play a fun game on April Fool’s Day. They stick paper fish on each other’s backs. That’s why in some places, April Fool’s Day is also called April Fish.
