Yashasvi Jaiswal, a 22-year-old opener, played a crucial role in India’s massive 434-run victory, hitting an impressive double century of 214 not out. This made him only the third Indian batter to achieve back-to-back double hundreds in Tests, following the footsteps of Vinod Kambli and Virat Kohli. Despite facing back spasms and retiring hurt on Saturday, Jaiswal displayed remarkable determination, returning on Sunday to hit 12 sixes and 10 boundaries. Rohit Sharma, the team captain, acknowledged Jaiswal’s incredible start to his Test career but emphasized the importance of not putting too much pressure on the young player.
In addition to Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma praised debutant Sarfaraz Khan, who marked his first Test appearance with twin fifties. Sarfaraz showcased a fearless batting approach, forming a crucial 172-run partnership with Jaiswal in the second innings. This partnership helped India extend their final innings lead beyond 550 runs, setting a challenging target for England.
In the first innings, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja played gritty knocks to recover from a challenging situation, turning the score from 33 for 3 to a respectable 445. Rohit explained that the decision to hold back Sarfaraz Khan and promote Jadeja to bat at No. 5 was a strategic move, considering Jadeja’s experience and recent form. However, he clarified that there is no fixed long-term plan for the batting order, and decisions are made based on the opposition’s bowling composition.
