In India, every state is mandated to have its own transport department according to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Maharashtra Transport Department was set up to meet the legal requirements of section 213(1) of the MVA, 1988. It is currently overseen by the Commissioner of Transport of Maharashtra. The department is responsible for various tasks and enforcement of laws related to transport. Operating through more than 50 functional offices spread across different areas and districts, the Maharashtra RTO ensures smooth transportation regulation throughout the state.
