The much-anticipated Formula E race in Bangalore for 2024, scheduled on February 10, has unfortunately been canceled, leaving many racing fans disappointed. Formula E, the exciting all-electric racing series, confirmed the cancellation, pointing to concerns arising after the recent state assembly elections in Karnataka.
Breach of Agreement Claims
Formula E is considering legal action due to a “breach of contract” by the Karnataka government. The Urban Development Department, under the government’s control, reportedly decided not to honor the Host City Agreement signed on October 30, 2023.\
In an official statement, Formula E Operations (FEO) expressed its disappointment, mentioning that it had no option but to formally notify the Urban Development Department of the breach of contract. FEO is now exploring its next steps under the Host City Agreement and relevant laws.
Background of the Bangalore E-Prix
The first-ever Bangalore E-Prix happened earlier this year, drawing around 31,000 attendees. While the drivers liked the track, there were issues with operations and infrastructure. Despite doubts about the event’s return, it was confirmed as part of the 2024 Formula E calendar in October.
However, complications arose as the organizing team behind the race disbanded in August. The change in governance in Karnataka, with a new political party in control, added to the uncertainties.
Expressing Disappointment
Alberto Longo, Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer of Formula E, expressed deep disappointment for the vast motorsport fanbase in India. Longo emphasized the importance of hosting a world championship race and acknowledged the efforts of the Motor Sports Association of Karnataka (MSAK) in bringing Formula E back to Bangalore. The cancellation, he stated, was a letdown for both local and national fans.
Impact on Formula E Calendar
With the cancellation of the Bangalore E-Prix, Formula E faces a reduced 15-race calendar for 2024. The absence of a replacement event leaves a significant gap of almost two months between the Riyadh E-Prix (January 26-27) and the Rio de Janeiro E-Prix (March 16).
A Blow for Motorsport Enthusiasts
The cancellation of the 2024 Bangalore E-Prix is a setback for motorsport enthusiasts in India. The claims of breach of contract add complexity to the situation, and the lack of a replacement event intensifies the disappointment for fans eagerly awaiting the thrilling Formula E race in Bangalore.
