Get ready for some fantastic news, Apple fans! The upcoming iPhone 16 series is set to bring a major upgrade to its hardware, promising even better AI performance, just in time for the release of iOS 18. According to reports, Apple is gearing up to enhance the processor of its 2024 iPhone lineup, following the success of the iPhone 15 in 2023. The buzz is that the tech giant is working on exciting AI features to debut with the next operating system update.

Competing with Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series, which recently hit the market with its own set of AI features, Apple plans to step up its game. An article from Economic Daily News (in Chinese) reveals that the iPhone 16 will feature upgraded A18 chips, the powerhouse behind its performance. What’s catching our attention is the improved Neural Engine that will accompany the A18 mobile processor. The M4 chips, also making their debut with the iPhone 16, are expected to boast a brand-new Neural Engine with significantly more cores.

For context, the current iPhone 15 models sport a Neural Engine with 16 cores, a trend that started with the iPhone 14, iPhone 13, and iPhone 12 series. Looking back, the iPhone 11 and iPhone XS had an 8-core Neural Engine, while the older iPhone 8 series lagged with only two Neural Engine cores.

The buzz around town suggests that the increased number of cores in the new Neural Engine might be the secret sauce behind some of the rumored AI features arriving with the iOS 18 update. However, Apple’s track record shows that they have a knack for enhancing Neural Engine performance without necessarily increasing core counts.
