The Tamil film “Annapoorani,” featuring Nayanthara, has recently sparked a major controversy due to alleged ‘anti-Hindu scenes.’ Released on December 1 and subsequently available on Netflix from December 29, the movie faced severe criticism on social media, prompting the streaming platform to take it down. Zee Studios, the co-producers of the film, issued an apology in response to the backlash, asserting that the movie was not intended to hurt Hindu sentiments and clarified that it will only return to Netflix after editing out the controversial scenes.
Backlash and Removal from Netflix:
The movie faced significant backlash on social media platforms, with numerous users expressing their displeasure over what they deemed ‘anti-Hindu’ content. This led Netflix to remove the film from its platform. Additionally, an FIR was filed against the movie makers in Madhya Pradesh, adding a legal dimension to the controversy.
Zee Studios Apology:
In light of the criticism, Zee Studios released a statement apologizing for any unintended offense caused by the film. They clarified that the movie’s intention was not to hurt the sentiments of Hindus and Brahmins but acknowledged the need for edits to address the contentious scenes. The production house assured that “Annapoorani” will not return to Netflix until the necessary modifications are made.
Complaint and Allegations:
The controversy escalated when a complaint was filed against various individuals associated with the film, including actress Nayanthara, Jai, Nilesh Krishna, Jatin Sethi of Naad Studios, R Ravindran of Trident Arts, Punit Goenka of Zee Studios, and Shariq Patel, Monika Shergil of Netflix India. The complainant specifically pointed out scenes deemed offensive to the Hindu community, such as a Hindu priest’s daughter offering Namaz to cook Biryani and the alleged promotion of Love Jihad in the storyline.
Social Media Outrage and Protests:
Since the film’s debut on Netflix, right-wing social media users have expressed their discontent, demanding legal action against the filmmakers. Several right-wing groups have organized protests in various locations, denouncing the movie for its perceived disrespect towards Hindu sentiments.
