The movie starts off casually with a group of friends having fun at a wedding party and getting into some arguments with another gang. Everything seems light and easygoing until one of them falls into a ravine. But here’s the catch – each character has their unique traits, like one guy who screams loudly when excited, and these details come back into play later in the story, making the payoffs quite satisfying.
Chidambaram, known for his debut film “Jan-E-Man,” proves his skill in balancing different tones, shifting seamlessly from humor to seriousness. In “Manjummel Boys,” inspired by a real-life incident, he faces new challenges, especially when the audience already knows how things will end. Yet, the film manages to keep you invested throughout.
The survival thriller aspect might remind you of another film, “Malootty,” but “Manjummel Boys” takes a different route by closely connecting the events to the strong friendship among the characters. As one of them finds themselves in a dangerous situation, the movie skillfully weaves in childhood memories, linking past actions to the present crisis.

The production design by Ajayan Chalissery, capturing the bat-filled ravine, and Shyju Khalid’s visuals during the rescue are outstanding. Sushin Shyam’s background score adds to the immersive experience, with a special mention of a key moment where Ilayaraja’s classic song ‘Kanmani Anbodu Kathalan’ takes center stage, elegantly paying tribute to the original.
The casting deserves applause, as each actor delivers exactly what the story requires. The film’s impact is further heightened by references to the real-life event in the epilogue, featuring snapshots of the actual people involved.
